The Phases of Meiosis

Card 1: Interphase

In this stage, the cell grows and prepares for meiosis by replicating its DNA and organizing its chromosomes. The chromatin in the nucleus condenses into visible chromosomes, and the centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell.

Card 2: Prophase

In this stage, each replicated chromosome is made up of two chromatids, both with the same genetic information. The homologous chromosomes pair up with one another, forming homologous chromosome pairs. The centromere attaches the chromatids to the spindle fibers.

Card 3: Metaphase

In this stage, tension applied by the spindle fibers aligns all chromosomes with their homologous partner at the center of the cell. The chromosomes are pulled apart and begin moving towards the cell poles.

Card 4: Anaphase

In this stage, the homologous chromosomes separate, and the spindle fibers shorten. The chromosomes are pulled apart and move towards the opposite ends of the cell.

Card 5: Telophase

In this stage, the nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, and the cytoplasm divides to form two daughter cells.
